Do you have the right management style?

Imagine that you have just started a new job as a project manager. You're excited to get to work, but during your first few days with your team you notice that things aren't working out the way you imagined. You feel as if you aren't quite connecting with them. Communication is being mishandled on all sides, and important projects are not getting the attention that they need.

You might think that this is a sign that you aren't cut out to be a manager. But don't be discouraged. It is also possible that your management style simply isn't the right fit for your company's culture.

As a recent article on points out, there are several different kinds of basic management styles. Some people are micro-managers who like to get involved in every little detail of the project. Others are content to play a more hands-off role as delegators, issuing more general directions to competent subordinates and giving them the freedom to work out the details.

Not everyone chooses a personal management style. In fact, many of us just do what comes naturally. But our innate style can present a problem when team members do not respond well to it. For example, some employees work best when they are allowed to make their own decisions about how to execute a project task. Others are more collaborative and may prefer a manager who plays an active role.

As the team leader, it is up to you to figure out how your team members work best and adjust your leadership style accordingly.
