How do managers win the respect of their teams?

Who are the most loved leaders in the business world? Career website Glassdoor has attempted to find the answer.

The site publishes an annual list of CEOs who are rated highly by their employees. This year, the top three CEOs at small and midsize companies were Robert Reid of Intact Corporation, Anthony Bruce of Applies Predictive Technologies and Steve Beauchamp of Paylocity. All scored 100 percent in the survey.

At large companies, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner took the top spot, beating out Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, who held the position last year.

How do these individuals command so much respect from their employees? It all comes down to building trust.

According to a recent article on Inc.com, there are several ways you can earn the trust of your team members—most importantly, by showing that you value them.

First, if you are meeting with a team member, eliminate all distractions. Close the door of your office, silence your cell phone and don't look at your computer screen unless it is absolutely necessary. Better yet, turn the monitor off altogether to show that the person has your full attention.

Second, make sure it is clear how long the meeting will last. Obviously, managers are busy people and often have multiple engagements throughout the day. Rather than bring a meeting to an abrupt halt, be frank about when the conversation will have to end so the team member knows what to expect.

Finally, listen closely. When you ask a specific question, wait to hear the full response before asking a follow-up. Sometimes it helps to repeat a paraphrased version of the answer back to the person, just to indicate that you understand.
