Is stress holding you or your team back?

Is stress causing your performance—or your team's—to suffer? You might think that any such  decline reflects poorly on your abilities as a leader. But it is also possible that the answer is simpler than that—you're just stressed, and it is holding you back.

Though many of us pride ourselves on our ability to juggle numerous tasks and put in long hours, the negative consequences add up. Stress can strike without warning, and we often don't realize how much it is affecting us until it overwhelms us.

How can you tell if your stress has built up to unsustainable levels? A recent article on Inc.com pointed out that if you are having difficulty completing your normal tasks and if your typical stress relief routines are not working, you might be suffering from severe stress.

"We miss those subtle and not-so-subtle signs that appear before the total burnout wakes us up to the impending danger," the article reads. "Burnout equals total shutdown, and nothing could be worse for performance (or your business) than that."

And it isn't just your own stress levels that you need to watch out for. A good manager knows when his or her team members are reaching unhealthy stress levels, and recognizes when it's time to intervene and dial back on assignments. After all, it is better for your project to keep the team as a whole in good running order.
