PMP recertification lessens leadership complacency

The "climb the ladder" mentality is as deeply ingrained an American ideal as any other.

Most of us believe in upward mobility, and it's that idea that pushes us to the next promotion and to strive for the highest position in our profession.

But once we've achieved a leadership position, what's the next "rung"? For many, simply being able to look back at the distance they've traveled is sufficient. They settle into their new positions of power, and, believing they've "made it," begin to neglect the skills that helped them get there in the first place.

In a story about determining whether a leadership style is outdated, Forbes contributor Glenn Llopis points to two related red flags. One is a warning sign of a leader who has become complacent, the other of a leader who has stopped the process of self-reinvention.

Llopis correctly points out that the only path toward sustainable leadership is constant reinvention. Core principles should remain fairly consistent, but in Llopis's assessment, the "style, approach and overall attitude" of leaders must be malleable to whatever context surrounds them.

Fortunately for project managers, their field does not allow even its most talented and decorated leaders to become complacent.

Even after earning the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI), professionals must continue to recertify every three years. This ensures that project managers are continually held to strict industry standards.
