Project managers should field diverse teams

When confronting a problem, experienced project managers often turn to their team for ideas. But how valuable are these ideas if everyone has the same point of view?

Is the solution to the problem facing your organization really is that obvious? Or is your team simply too homogenous, filled with people who all think the same way?

Some managers don't realize how much of a hindrance a homogenous team can be. Recent studies demonstrate that diverse workplaces tend to produce better results.

According to an article on, these studies focused on teams of scientific researchers. Among scientists, a mark of a quality research paper can be measured, in part, by how often it is cited by future researchers. The news source pointed out that papers written by more diverse teams tended to attract more attention.

Ethnic diversity was not the only factor being measured. As it turns out, even teams that are made up of people from different geographic areas tended to perform better than their more homogenous counterparts. 

This is not the first time research has uncovered similar results. For example, studies have shown that companies with more women on their executive boards see better results.

That's because teams that foster more than one viewpoint are better equipped to solve problems and execute complex plans. As a project manager, you should do everything you can to field the most diverse team possible.
