The three simple keys to effective management

There are countless books, magazine articles and blog posts about what it takes to be a leader. But, as the principle of Occam's razor tells us, the simplest hypothesis is often the best.

Mark Hurd, co-president and former CEO of Oracle, put it well in a recent post on LinkedIn when he wrote about keeping the formula for leadership "pretty simple."

As Hurd sees it, a leader must be able to do three things effectively. He or she should develop a good strategy, execute that strategy and put the right people in the right places to implement the strategy.

All three steps are crucial. As Hurd notes, the world is fast-paced, and business strategies must be flexible in order to accommodate change.

"Consumer tastes and needs are shifting faster and more dramatically than ever before," he wrote. "Do you have a sustainable strategy for product development and customer engagement and employee engagement that lets you keep pace with this relentless upheaval?"

When it comes to implementing this strategy, managers must understand that they need to look beyond supply chains and make sure that all aspects of an organization are on the same page.

"[T]he margin for error in today's always-on business world is shrinking rapidly—and in spite of the fantastic applications and systems that are available to companies today, brilliant technology in the service of sub-par managers will yield nothing but sub-par results," Hurd writes.

For that reason, good recruiting is highly important.
