How project managers can combat low office morale

Employees are most productive when they are satisfied and engaged with their work. Low morale can lead to diminished communication and higher turnover, two things that can threaten the success of any project. To reach their projects' goals, project managers must maintain morale and ensure that their team is content and engrossed in their work.

Entrepreneur.com recently published a list of techniques to keep team morale from dropping into the red zone:

  • Remind the team of the project's impact. People often seek other rewards from their jobs besides a steady paycheck. For example, if your team is in the throes of creating a new medical device for arthritis patients, it is easy to lose sight of the patients who will benefit from this work. When reminded of the project's impact, team members can regain their focus and motivation.
  • Shake up the routine. If it has been a while since you walked into the hall and heard laughter, your team could probably benefit from a break in their routine. Informal outings or a cooperative office makeover can serve as good team-building activities as well as a break from the monotony of the daily drill.
  • Get involved with the community. Community service can boost public relations and build employee morale. Taking on volunteer projects helps strengthen bonds between team members and with the company's community.
