Survey: Project management training leads to better results

We know that well-trained project managers keep projects on track and achieve better results. A recent survey by PM Solutions proves it.

The survey, conducted in April by phone and online, asked 262 respondents from numerous industries to report how much they spent on project management training, how the training was delivered and whether the training was effective. The survey found that, on average, business organizations saw a 26 percent improvement in eight different performance categories. 

Among the different categories, the one that benefitted the most from training was stakeholder satisfaction, which improved by 29 percent. This was followed by schedule performance, which improved by 27 percent, and project failures, which decreased by 26 percent.

To achieve these results, respondents said they spent an average of $2,211 on six days of project management training per employee, per year. Instructor-led classroom training was the most common method used, though a significant number surveyed reported using self-directed "e-learning" on a computer or other device. In fact, some even said they used a combination of the two methods.

Other studies have revealed similar returns on investment in training. According to an article in CIO, a 2006 study by IDC also found that companies that spent 6-10 percent of their budgets on project management training were twice as likely to succeed as those that spent less.
